READING/LITERATURE
Trevor has been reading his choice of HOP chapter books including Detective Dog, The Big Little Picnic, and Dr. Seuss. He is reading his own quizzes with success in BrainPop Jr. and mad up his own game that resembles texting which he called Bingo Letters. This is a fun way for him to practice a most difficult subject for him: writing.
Trevor completed Reading Egg 100.
Trevor finished listening to "The Light at Tern Rock" read by me and 3 cd's from the fantasy novel "The Voyage of the Dawn Treader" and Junie B. Jones First Grade- 1 cd.
Trevor practiced writing about a short visit with Grandparents, a visit to the hospital, a trip to the zoo, and how to make a jam sandwich.
Trevor enjoys rules application via Electric Company and has learned how to apply soft "g" and hard "g" rules. This is exciting!
MATH
Trevor has completed Math lessons through Lesson 79 with good
understanding. Addition facts are much more fluent. Hungry fish math app is a perfect practice for this.
Trevor has completed ALL Kindergarten and FIRST GRADE curriculum and a total of 117 lessons in Dreambox.
He has completed 85% of problem solving for 2nd grade.
I allow him to choose the next work and I can see his confidence building in the story problem section. This is good!
SCIENCE
Trevor studied turkey organs -- the heart and a foot, solar systems, took a field trip to take x-rays of a fish and a rotisserie chicken, studied bears, visited the Discovery Center's Try This exhibit and read the Usborne book of Science.
He has already finished his Science Fusion curriculum.
SOCIAL STUDIES
We use Brain Pop Jr. and Library books as well as books from Sonlight
curriculum and books recently purchased from IDEA's resource center.
Trevor studied the history of the American Flag & Benjamin Franklin

Trevor practiced writing non-fiction stories and identifying plot in short stories.
Writing practice is going better than expected. It's difficult for him and he doesn't enjoy it. We focus every time on getting spaces between letters, capitalizing the first word of the sentence, and ending with punctuation--- but overall not being afraid to write. This summer we will begin-(again)- phonics with Spelling Road to Writing and Reading which I think will alleviate the fear or frustration he has about spelling a word wrong. I encourage him to sound out the word and not be afraid.
MATH
Trevor has completed Math lessons through Lesson 77 with good understanding. I skipped lesson 76 because it was pushing his level a little too much with adding double digit numbers that carried a one. Mentally. I know he'll be able to do it soon, but I will instead focus on fluency for the addendums under 20 because I think this will help him do Lesson 76 without frustration. He has good ability in Math and seems to only be limited when he doesn't practice.
Using Dreambox as a practice tool is perfect because it's visual and re-inforcing Right Start Math concepts in a fun way and without a pencil! There isn't much wasted activity in this program because the "Arcade" is more math practice and story problem challenges. Trevor has completed ALL kindergarten curriculum here, has only a handful of problems in place value and story problems to finish ALL of 1st grade curriculum and has completed 112 lessons. He seems to be approaching his threshold on math and I will continue to play games with him a

We stress writing and sounding out words as he writes, so writing is coming easier. Trevor is improving use of capitalization, spaces between words and ending punctuation.

Trevor completed the orange book from Hooked on Phonics 1st Grade level and really enjoyed the books (they are much more interesting that the easier books.) He showed consistent progress with sight words since beginning this program about 5 weeks ago. He now rarely forgets to start from left to right. He is noticing blending sounds that sometimes can sound similar to others-- such as "DR" sounding more like a J or a "TR" sometimes sounding like a "CH". He notices and corrects his own pronunciation accordingly.
Trevor is reading without fuss or fear and is doing it on his on while we are in the car and around town without prompting from me or anyone else. He expressed his goal this year is to read a book we read together by himself! It is almost fun for him. This is marvelous and a real victory for the Swan Academy!
Trevor still very much struggles to turn the table and write the same word he can read, though, his fluency in this isn't without progress. His penmanship is improving and he is remembering rules for capitalizing, periods, and is just beginning to understand how to use quotation marks.

We began counting thousands this month and visualizing it with the abacus tiles from the book.
Trevor has started doing daily math races for practice in math facts and is motivated by beating his previous score. He completes these +1 and +2 sheets with 100% accuracy every time fixing his mistakes as he goes.

October Notes
Math
We just received the Right Start Math books and manipulatives this month
and enjoy them. They are definitely growing his base knowledge in math
in a far superior way than the horizon math K book which we were using
previously. I can see Trevor's fluency growing in the way this math is
taught and he is able to practice counting (without counting) using the
abacus, with blocks and even by grouping sounds by 5. The dreambox
practice has challenged him just the right amount without exasperating
him and showing me where more help is needed. Trevor's understanding of
place value needs work. He is improving greatly in his writing numbers
in the correct order. For example, he had a much worse habit of
writing seventeen as a seven on the right, then a one on the left. We
practice telling the date, weekday, and time every day and his
understanding is improving. I expect him to be more proficient with
place value and time within the next month. In spite of his poor test
scores on measurement, he seems to understand it and execute measuring
well. We are on lesson 8 of Right Start Math.
Trevor has completed about 1/2 of the kindergarten curriculum on
dreambox-- most of it about comparisons, ordering and counting with 31
lessons completed.
Trevor has read all 24 Fun Tales books, but has a hard time not slowing
down and focusing on the letter sounds instead of the pictures. This
problem is much less evident than at the beginning of October. He can
now fly through the Explode the Code pages in about 1/3 the time it took
him at the beginningof the month. He is on Lesson 11 of 11 in Explode
the Code 1.
Trevor no longer needs a pencil grip as he consistently holds his pencil
correctly, can write every letter in capital and lowercase correctly as
well as number 1-20. He had a small but definite problem of not always
going left to right in both writing and reading, but it is improving
week by week.
We are working on sight words, and will have mastered many more before
the end of the year.
Reading Eggs is a good online practice for Trevor. As he took the
placement test he simply became impatient/lazy and began guessing on the
answers. His progress since then has been quick, but a review. He
just unlocked level 5.
Trevor learned all the sounds of the alphabet, vowels and consanants,
and the sounds of ou, er, oy, oi, ay, ai, oo, ea, ch, ee, sh, th, and a
couple of spelling rules.
Trevor practices writing mostly in the form of letters to Grandma,
Grandpa, friends, etc.
We practice and discuss new vocabulary everyday . We are on chapter 33
of 36 in Uncle Wiggly's Story Book and chapter 20 of 21 of Milly Molly
Mandy and chapter 8 of The Boxcar Children.
Trevor is enrolled in a once-a-week Science Class through Providence Co-Op. Thru this he has participated in seed studies, yeast studies, and rockets. We also meet with a group of other kindergartners for science club. This month we studied polar regions and studied ice(berg) blocks in bathtubs. This club meets weekly on Wednesdays and we just started Oct. 24. At home we have been through Brain Pop Jr.'s earth science studies titled "Land" He watched this over and over with fascination repeating, "I didn't know that did you, mom?" We have made paper air races with folded paper. Trevor regularly helps me in the kitchen and we talk about physical properties of food at a kindergarten level. We have read Bearnstein Bears big book of Science, "How Do you lift a Lion?" (about simple machines), "Is the blue whale the biggest thing there is?" and "What's smaller than a pygmy shrew?" as well as pertinent parts of the Usborne Starting Point Science book "Why do Tigers have Stripes?"
PE/Health
Trevor is enrolled in Gem
State Gymnastics where he attends every Thursday for 45 minutes. He
recently learned to complete a real right-handed cartwheel and improves
weekly in following directions instead of playing class clown.
He
raced in the Harrison Classic October 14th and immediately decided to
"work out everyday from 1-5". We created a collage of healthy and
non-healthy foods from newspaper advertisements and we regularly review
what we've learned from BrainPop Junior on nutrition and dental health
which prompted him to
"NEVER" again drink strawberry milk.
